Rapidly gaining recognition across the West, the Indian Relay Race in Casper, Wyoming, is a thrilling display of the best riders competing in multiple heart-pounding races.
Known as America’s original extreme sport, Indian Relay is a celebration of the athletic abilities of athletes from the horse nations and the Thoroughbreds they ride. The sport, with its origins dating back centuries, has found its pinnacle in Casper, Wyoming. The annual Championship of Champions event in September is a testament to the sport’s appeal, drawing a culturally diverse crowd from all over.
At a high level, the sport consists of four Warriors and three Thoroughbred/Quarter horses that compete on a half-mile circle racetrack. With six teams on the track, this event showcases the horsemanship skills, coordination, speed, and sportsmanship of 24 Warriors and 18 horses. Featured on a recent 60-minutes episode covering the 2023 event in Casper, Ken Real Bird, an accomplished announcer of Indian Relay, stated, “The hard part about the sport is jumping off the horse … Almost every heat has someone getting run over.”
